An ENT in Italy told me something about my hearing that no audiologist had told me in six years. He said if he could look behind your eardrum tonight, after all the years you have been losing your hearing, you would be shocked how little of it was ever about your ears. Except I only found this out because I spent three days on an anniversary trip through Rome with one ear completely blocked, and ended up in an Italian emergency room close to midnight, holding the side of my head, certain I had lost that side for good. We had been planning this trip for two years. Our 40th anniversary. The one we kept delaying. By night three, I was on a rooftop terrace near the Pantheon, wine in hand, watching the sun go down over the whole city. My husband laughing next to me. I remember thinking we should have done this ten years ago. Then about an hour later, I felt it. A stab behind my right ear. Like a nail being pushed in slowly from the inside. I figured it was the flight. My ear had blocked on the descent into Rome three days earlier and never popped. I told myself it was just pressure. I set my wine down and tried to yawn it open. Swallowed. Pinched my nose and blew, the way you do. It didn't ease. The pain spread down into my jaw, and then the terrace tilted. By the time my husband saw my face, I had both hands on the railing, gray and sweating, and I couldn't hear a word he was saying from that side. He had his phone out before I could say anything.
