My sinuses wrecked a river cruise through Germany. The physician on board was Swiss. She asked me ONE question that made my allergist back home look like she was working 15 years in the past. I'm 59. My husband and I had been putting money aside for that trip for two years. Fourteen days on the Rhine. Castles, wine country, little riverside towns. It started on the flight over. The descent into Frankfurt felt like two thumbs pressing in behind my cheekbones. By day three, we joined a walking tour through Rüdesheim's old lanes. Stone streets. Vineyards on the hills. Gorgeous. And I spent the whole tour breathing through my mouth. Nose sealed on both sides. Pressure sitting behind my eyes. Counting the minutes until I could sit down. At the wine tasting in a cellar afterward, I took one sip of Riesling and felt my nose close the rest of the way. I set the glass down and smiled through the next forty minutes. The nights were worse. 2 AM, every night, awake in the cabin with my mouth like paper. Flipping the pillow. Switching sides, because I already knew which side let me breathe. By the fourth night I was sleeping propped upright in the little cabin armchair. That's where my husband found me at sunrise. "You've been up every night of this trip, haven't you?" I didn't want to say it out loud. I'd spent three years covering up how bad my congestion had gotten. Packing THREE bottles of spray for a two-week trip and quietly panicking when one went missing.
