I've been a Christian for 40 years. Last month, a single word in a verse I've read a hundred times stopped me cold. I'm a pastor's wife. Have been for 32 years. I'm 61, and my faith isn't something I practice, it's who I am. Which is why I can't believe it took me this long to find what I'm about to share with you. For six years, I'd been quietly losing my hearing. Two years in hearing aids, $4,000 for the pair, the settings turned up every six months, and still nodding through conversations I couldn't follow. Sitting in the second pew catching half of my own husband's sermon. A decline I'd accepted as just part of getting older. I prayed about it. Every night before bed, I asked God to let me hear my husband preach the way I used to. Then came that Sunday in December. My husband was preaching from Isaiah 35. I was reading along in my own Bible, because from the second pew his words run together now. "Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped." I'd read that verse dozens of times before. But that morning, the word unstopped wouldn't let me go. It felt like a nudge I wasn't supposed to ignore. So I started searching what scripture actually says about the ears of the deaf. What I found floored me. Isaiah promises it twice. Chapter 29: "in that day shall the deaf hear." Chapter 35: "the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped." When Jesus healed the deaf man in Mark 7, He put His fingers in the man's ears and said one word
