My tinnitus ruined my river cruise through Germany. The ship's doctor was from Switzerland. She asked me ONE question that made my American audiologist look 15 years behind. I'm 59 years old. My husband and I saved for two years for this cruise. Two weeks down the Rhine. Castles, vineyards, small towns. Day three, we're on a walking tour through Heidelberg. Cobblestone streets. Crowded with tourists. Beautiful. But I can't focus on a word the tour guide says. The ringing is louder than she is. A high, thin whine that hasn't stopped for one second in three years, and in the crowd it climbs until it's all I can think about. I'm straining to follow her. Leaning in. Pressing my hand over my ear like that ever helps. Falling behind the group because I keep stopping to ask my husband what she said. By the time we get back to the ship, I'm exhausted. Not from walking. From the noise in my own head. My husband looks at me in our cabin. "You missed most of that tour, didn't you?" I don't want to admit it. I've been hiding how bad the ringing has gotten for three years. Snapping at him over nothing. Reading the same page four times because the whine won't let me hold a thought. Leaving rooms in the middle of conversations. Lying awake at two in the morning with a sound machine running because a quiet room makes it worse. And underneath all of it, the thing I never say out loud: it's louder than it was last year, and I'm scared of what it'll sound like in five. But I can't live
