I'm a Nurse. My Own Hands Were Ice for 30 Years. My hands have been cold for as long as I can remember. Not cool-to-the-touch cold. Cold like I'd just come in from a January parking lot, in the middle of August. I'd hold a hot mug with both hands at the nurses' station just to feel my fingers. I did that every morning for years. I wore socks to bed in July. My husband noticed and made a face the first few summers. After that he stopped saying anything. I told myself it was the job. Long shifts on cold floors will do that to you. When that stopped making sense, I told myself it was my age. Every doctor I ever mentioned it to said the same thing. "That's just your circulation, Diane. It happens to a lot of women your age." Not one of them told me what to do about it. I'd stand at the kitchen sink before bed and run warm water over my hands, standing there like I had nowhere else to be. I did what I'd always told my own patients not to do. I lived with it. I had almost 38 years of nursing behind me, and I figured if there were a real answer, I'd have found it by now. So I stopped looking. Then a few months ago, one of my regular patients came in for her checkup. Lovely woman, mid-sixties, hands and feet cold the whole time I'd known her. She'd sit in the waiting room with her gloves still on. But this time, when I went to take her pulse, her hands were warm. Actually warm. I asked her about it, half expecting her to say she'd just come in from a hot car.
