I had a hearing problem on a river cruise through Germany. The ship's doctor was from Switzerland. She asked me ONE question that made my American audiologist look 15 years behind. I'm 59 years old. My husband and I saved for two years for this cruise. Two weeks down the Rhine. Castles, vineyards, small towns. Day three, we're on a walking tour through Heidelberg. Cobblestone streets. Crowded with tourists. Beautiful. But I can't hear the tour guide. Her voice keeps getting swallowed by the crowd noise. I'm straining to catch every third word. Leaning in. Cupping my ear. Falling behind the group because I keep stopping to ask my husband what she said. By the time we get back to the ship, I'm exhausted. Not from walking. From listening. My husband looks at me in our cabin. "You missed most of that tour, didn't you?" I don't want to admit it. I've been hiding how bad my hearing has gotten for three years. Nodding along in conversations I can't follow. Avoiding restaurants because the background noise makes it impossible. Pretending I heard things I didn't. But I can't pretend anymore. "I need to get my ears checked," I say. The next morning, I go to the ship's concierge. "I need to see a doctor. Something's wrong with my hearing." She makes a call. Gets me an appointment that afternoon with the ship's physician. Her office is small. Clean. On Deck 2 near the medical center. Dr. Müller. Swiss accent. Maybe late 50s. She examines my ears. Looks in both canals. C
