My sleep apnea gave me a heart attack on my river cruise through Germany. Thank God I’m still here. The ship's doctor was from Switzerland. She asked me ONE question that made my American sleep doctor look 15 years behind. I'm 59 years old. My husband and I saved for two years for this cruise. Two weeks down the Rhine. Castles, vineyards, small towns. Day three, we're on a walking tour through Heidelberg. Cobblestone streets. Crowded with tourists. Beautiful. But I can't stay on my feet for the tour. I slept eight hours with the mask on and I feel like I've been hit by a truck. The guide is talking and the words slide right off me. I'm fighting to keep my eyes open. Nodding. Sitting down on every wall we pass. Falling behind the group because I keep stopping to rest on a street I should be able to walk. By the time we get back to the ship, I'm exhausted. Not from walking. From a night in the mask that was supposed to count as sleep. My husband looks at me in our cabin. "You missed most of that tour, didn't you?" I don't want to admit it. I've been hiding how bad the sleep apnea has gotten for three years. Nodding off at the table at my daughter's. Asleep in the recliner by seven with the TV talking to nobody. Packing the CPAP and a gallon of distilled water for every trip we take. Lying awake at two in the morning with the mask on the floor and my mouth dry as paper, deciding whether to put it back on. And underneath all of it, the thing I never say out loud: my blood
